The first question of people who want to buy an air conditioner or install a VRF system in a building is usually "which brand?" As a team that maintains and repairs units of dozens of brands in the field, what we see is this: between correctly chosen and correctly installed units of the same capacity, the difference comes more from service, parts and installation quality than from the brand. In this article we introduce the brands by origin, summarize recent ownership changes and explain what to look at when choosing.
How are air conditioner brands grouped by origin?
Air conditioner and VRF brands can roughly be grouped as Japanese, South Korean, Chinese, US and Turkish manufacturers. However, origin alone is not an indicator of quality: most big brands manufacture in factories in different countries, and some factories produce for more than one brand (OEM).
| Origin | Notable brands | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toshiba, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Hitachi | The market where VRF technology developed; wide range of indoor units |
| South Korea | LG, Samsung | A wide product range from home air conditioners to VRF and chillers |
| China | Midea, Gree, Haier, Hisense | Among the world's largest air conditioner manufacturers; they also manufacture for other brands |
| USA | Carrier, Trane, York | Mostly central systems; Carrier is known in Türkiye through the Alarko Carrier partnership |
| Türkiye | Arçelik, Vestel, Baymak, Demirdöküm, Airfel, Alarko Carrier | Wide service network; some are part of international groups |
A note on terms: VRV is Daikin's registered product name. Technically, VRF is the general name for variable refrigerant flow systems. So the answer to the question "VRV or VRF?" is that they are the same technology.
Which brands changed owners in recent years?
Several major acquisitions took place in the HVAC sector in 2024 and 2025. These changes do not affect how a unit works, but the service network, spare parts channels and the party responsible for the warranty may change over time.
| Period | Change |
|---|---|
| January 2024 | Carrier acquired Viessmann's climate solutions business (including Viessmann heat pumps). |
| May–August 2025 | Fujitsu General joined the Paloma Rheem group. |
| August 2025 | Bosch acquired Johnson Controls' residential and light commercial HVAC business and the Johnson Controls-Hitachi joint venture; Hitachi uses the brand name under license. |
| November 2025 | Samsung acquired FläktGroup, the German manufacturer of ventilation and air handling units. |
So when looking for parts for an older unit, it helps to check the brand's current distributor in Türkiye and its authorized service channel.
What should you look at when choosing an air conditioner and VRF brand?
The right brand choice is made by evaluating together service and parts access, seasonal efficiency, refrigerant, compressor technology, system compatibility in VRF and warranty terms.
01Service and spare parts access
When an electronic board, fan motor, expansion valve or compressor fails, how many days the part takes to reach your city determines how long the unit stays out of service. Especially in commercial buildings and VRF systems, this is the most important criterion in choosing a brand.
02Seasonal efficiency and energy label
Instead of the instantaneous EER value in catalogs, look at the SEER (cooling) and SCOP (heating) values, which represent the whole season, and at the energy label class. The efficiency difference between two units of the same capacity can add up to more than the price difference over the years. For the calculation, you can use our air conditioner energy and operating cost calculator.
03Refrigerant
Most new home air conditioners use R32, and most VRF systems use R410A or R32. The refrigerant type matters for installation, maintenance and future availability of the gas. For details, see our article on the R22, R410A and R32 transition.
04Inverter technology
Today almost all brands make units with inverter compressors. The difference is how stably they run at low capacity and their part-load efficiency. We cover the topic in detail in how much does an inverter air conditioner save.

05System compatibility in VRF
In VRF systems, the indoor and outdoor units must be from the same brand and from series approved by the manufacturer; different brands do not communicate with each other. Central controllers, building automation (BACnet, Modbus) gateways and service software are also brand-specific. That is why choosing a brand for VRF is a decision that lasts the whole life of the building.
06Warranty terms
For the warranty to be valid, most manufacturers require installation by authorized persons and periodic maintenance. Before buying, get the warranty period, its scope and the maintenance requirement in writing.
Not sure which brand suits you?
Let's inspect your building on site and compare capacity, brand and system options in writing.
How much does brand matter in a home split air conditioner?
In a home split air conditioner, the right capacity, good installation and regular maintenance usually matter more than the brand. A unit charged without a vacuum, with faulty pipe connections or with a drain left without slope will fail whatever its brand. For capacity, see our article on how many BTU air conditioner should I buy, and for maintenance our periodic maintenance page.
Why is brand choice more critical for VRF and central systems?
VRF and central systems are used for many years, and changing brand later means changing the indoor units and the control infrastructure too. That is why spare parts continuity, the brand's service structure in Türkiye and whether the system can later be expanded with additional indoor units come first for these systems. For VRF faults, you can look at our article on addressing and communication faults.
Which brands does YOİ Mühendislik service?
We are an LG authorized service and sales point. For all other air conditioner and VRF brands, we provide maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair as an independent technical service. You can find all our brand pages on our brands page.
Brand names belong to their owners. YOİ Mühendislik is an authorized service and sales point for LG; for other brands it provides maintenance, fault, and repair services as an independent technical service. Model and serial information may vary by manufacturer and market; for current information, refer to the manufacturer's Türkiye sources.
Frequently asked questions
Are VRF and VRV the same thing?
Yes, it is the same technology. VRV is Daikin's registered product name; VRF is the general name for variable refrigerant flow systems.
Can indoor and outdoor units from different brands be used together?
No. The communication and control software between indoor and outdoor units is brand-specific. In split air conditioners too, indoor and outdoor units must be paired in combinations approved by the manufacturer.
Which is the best air conditioner brand?
There is no single right answer. Service and spare parts access where you are, seasonal efficiency values, correct capacity selection and installation quality matter more than the brand.
What is the difference between authorized service and independent technical service?
An authorized service works under contract with the manufacturer and carries out warranty work. An independent technical service provides out-of-warranty and contract-based maintenance and repair. For a unit still under warranty, you should apply to the brand's authorized service for warranty work.
