Comparison of the three gases
| R410A | R32 | R290 (propane) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | HFC blend | Single-component HFC | Natural hydrocarbon |
| GWP value | About 2,088 | About 675 | About 3 |
| Flammability class | A1 (non-flammable) | A2L (mildly flammable) | A3 (highly flammable) |
| Efficiency | Good | Generally better than R410A | Very good |
| Charge amount | High | Less than R410A | Very small, limited |
| In a new single split air conditioner after 2027 | In scope, since GWP is 750 or more | GWP below 750 | GWP below 750 |
GWP values are approximate and may differ slightly by source; for a decision, check the gas information on the product's label.
What does the regulation say?
In Türkiye, fluorinated gases are regulated by the regulation published in the Official Gazette dated 15 October 2024: Regulation on Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change lists the following among the products banned from being placed on the market starting in 2027:
- Containing less than 3 kg of HFC with a GWP of 750 or higher: single split air conditioners,
- Using HFC with a GWP of 150 or higher: portable room air conditioners.

What will happen to the R410A air conditioner in my home?
Nothing will happen. The ban applies to placing new products on the market. R410A air conditioners already in use can continue to operate and be maintained and repaired. However, as the supply of high-GWP gases declines over time, gas availability and cost may change. So:
- Having a refrigerant leak detected early and repaired is better than adding gas over and over: refrigerant leaks and gas charging.
- An air conditioner is never filled with any gas other than the one on its label. R32 is not charged into an R410A unit.
- If you are thinking of replacing an old R410A unit that breaks down often, see our article should I replace my old air conditioner.
R22 air conditioners
R22 is a gas that was restricted much earlier because it damages the ozone layer. Repairing R22 units becomes difficult when they fail. We explained the transition options in our article switching from R22 to R410A and R32.
Is an R290 air conditioner safe?
R290 is a flammable gas, but manufacturers make it safe with very small charge amounts, leak-tight components and designs that meet standards. Installation and service require equipment suited to flammable gas, ventilation and trained personnel. R32 is also in the mildly flammable (A2L) class; these units must also be installed and maintained by a qualified team.
Let us check your air conditioner's gas and leak-tightness
Send us the model and gas information from your air conditioner's label, and we will direct you to leak testing, gas charging or replacement.
When buying a new air conditioner
Look at the gas type, energy class and SEER/SCOP values on the label together. A high-efficiency inverter air conditioner that runs on a low-GWP gas complies with both today's rules and those of the years ahead. For capacity selection, see our article air conditioner prices and BTU selection.

Frequently asked questions
Is R410A being banned?
Its use is not banned. From 2027, placing on the market new single split air conditioners that contain less than 3 kg of HFC and use a gas with a GWP of 750 or more is prohibited; R410A's GWP is above this limit.
Is R32 or R410A better?
R32 has a lower GWP and generally runs more efficiently with less gas. However, a unit must be used with the gas it was designed for.
Can R32 be charged into my R410A air conditioner?
No. No gas other than the one stated on the unit's label may be charged; oil, pressure and safety values are different.
Can I still find service for my R410A air conditioner after 2027?
Yes. The rule is about placing new products on the market; maintenance and repair of existing units continue.
