About Ankara Chiller Maintenance: Winter Freeze Protection and Summer Preparation
A large share of big buildings in Ankara are cooled by central chiller–fan coil or chiller–air handling unit systems. Ministries and public campuses, hospitals, universities, plazas and shopping malls lead this building type. In the industrial zones of OSTİM, İvedik and Sincan, chillers are used less for comfort cooling and more for process water, mold and machine cooling, and run for most of the year.
The city's continental climate creates two separate risk periods for chillers. In winter, night temperatures fall below zero; if the water left in the evaporator, piping or hydraulic module of an outdoor air-cooled chiller freezes, the heat exchanger can crack. That is why, in autumn, the glycol ratio should be measured, the water drained in a controlled way if the system will not be used, and the crankcase and antifreeze heaters and flow switches verified. For process chillers that run all winter, low ambient temperature control is also important.
In summer, rising outdoor temperatures and the dust, pollen and steppe particles carried by dry air clog condenser coils quickly. A dirty condenser causes high-pressure faults, strains the compressor and raises energy consumption. In pre-summer maintenance in Ankara, condenser washing, fan and motor checks, refrigerant pressures, compressor currents and electrical connections are handled together.
Chiller maintenance in Ankara should not be limited to the unit itself. Circulation pumps, expansion tank, air vents, strainers and the water treatment setup directly affect system efficiency. Because the city's mains water can leave scale, scale and sediment buildup in condenser tubes and cooling towers of water-cooled systems should be monitored regularly.

Frequently asked questions
What should we do if we shut the chiller down for winter?
If there is no glycol in the system or the ratio is insufficient, the water must be drained in a controlled way or brought to the right ratio. In Ankara this is recommended in autumn, before the first frosts.
How often should the glycol ratio be checked?
At least once a year, before winter. If water has been added to the system the ratio may have dropped, so it should be measured again.
The chiller trips on high pressure at the start of summer. What could the cause be?
The most common causes are a dirty condenser coil and fan problems. Refrigerant charge, sensors and the electrical side should also be checked.
