Result
Preliminary calculation: This tool is for quick sizing and information. In real projects, load calculation, selection and commissioning require engineering calculations and a site survey. Results are approximate values.

Q_condenser = Q_evap + P_compressor, P_compressor = Q_evap / COPV̇_cond = Q_condenser / (1.163 × ΔT)E = Q_condenser × 3600 / 2450, B = E / (C − 1), M = E + BCooling tower selection depends on the wet-bulb temperature, the target tower outlet temperature and the approach. Water treatment and regular blowdown prevent scaling and corrosion; as cycles of concentration increase, blowdown decreases but scale risk increases.
- A hygiene and maintenance plan is essential because of Legionella risk
- If condenser tubes scale up, efficiency drops quickly
- Winter freeze protection and a backup circuit should be considered in the design
Frequently asked questions
How much makeup water does a tower need?
It is the sum of evaporation, blowdown and drift losses; the tool calculates the first two.
What are cycles of concentration?
The ratio of the dissolved solids concentration in the tower water to that in the makeup water; a higher value means less blowdown but a greater risk of scale.
Is this needed for an air-cooled chiller?
No. A tower is only needed for chillers that use a water-cooled condenser.
