A damp-basement, sour-sock or sewage smell spreading through the room when the air conditioner is turned on is one of the complaints we hear most often in service calls. The smell almost always has a cause, and in most cases the unit is not broken, the indoor unit just needs cleaning. The type of smell largely reveals where it comes from.
In this article, we explain the types of smell, the checks you can safely do at home and the situations that need a technician, one by one.
Why does an air conditioner smell bad?
An air conditioner's bad smell occurs when dust, skin flakes and kitchen steam collecting on the damp surfaces of the indoor unit become food for mold, bacteria and fungi. During cooling, the evaporator (the indoor unit coil) condenses moisture from the air; the spaces between the fins and the drain pan below stay wet for hours. This dark, warm and humid environment is ideal for microorganisms to multiply.
When the unit is switched off, the fan stops but the surfaces stay wet. The strong smell you get in the first few minutes when you run the air conditioner the next day is this mold smell, built up overnight, being blown out.
Possible causes by type of smell
The character of the smell is the best clue to the source of the problem. The table below summarizes the matches we see in the field.
| Smell | Most likely cause | Who fixes it? |
|---|---|---|
| Mold, damp basement | Mold on the evaporator and fan wheel, dirty filter | Filter: you. Internal cleaning: service |
| Sour, sweat, socks | Bacterial layer on the coil (biofilm) | Service (chemical wash) |
| Sewage, rotten eggs | Drain line connected to the wastewater drain without a trap, clogged pan | Service or plumber |
| Burnt, plastic, electrical | Board, wiring or fan motor overheating | Switch off immediately, call service |
| Cigarette, cooking smell | Filter and fins absorbing ambient odors | Filter cleaning, service if needed |
| Sweetish, chemical | Possible refrigerant leak | Service (leak test) |
If you smell something burnt or electrical, switch the air conditioner off at the fuse rather than the remote and do not run it until service arrives. This smell can be a sign of a wiring or board fault.
Checks you can safely do at home
Most of a light musty smell can be removed with filter cleaning and good usage habits. The steps below are done without touching the electrical or refrigerant circuit; turn the unit off before you start.
01Remove and wash the filters
Lift the front panel, remove the dust filters and wash them with warm water and a soft brush. Dry the filters completely in the shade before putting them back; installing a wet filter increases the smell. With heavy use, this should usually be done every two to four weeks.
02Run the fan after cooling
Before turning the air conditioner off, run it in fan-only mode for 10-20 minutes. This time lets the coil dry and significantly reduces mold formation. Many newer models have a drying, self clean or internal clean function that does this automatically; look for this function in the user manual.
03Check the end of the drain hose
The end of the drain hose that finishes near the outdoor unit or on the balcony may be submerged in water, crushed or blocked by an insect nest. The end should be open and slope downward. If water drips from under the indoor unit, the problem is in the drainage; we explained the causes in detail in our article air conditioner leaking water.
04Review the room and how you use it
In rooms near the kitchen, where people smoke or where pets live, the indoor unit absorbs smells faster. Filter cleaning should be done more often in these rooms. Running an air conditioner that has been off for a long time for a few minutes with a window open on the first day of the season also pushes the first smell outside.
Spray disinfectants on the market can suppress the smell temporarily but do not reach the layer behind the coil and on the fan wheel. Spraying liquid on the board and motor area can cause a fault.
If the smell does not go away: what does service do?
A smell that does not go away despite filter cleaning shows that dirt has settled on the inner surfaces of the evaporator and on the fan wheel. At this point, what needs to be done is a chemical indoor unit cleaning. The technician cuts the electrical connection, protects the board and electronics section, fits a washing cover over the indoor unit and washes the coil with a suitable chemical and pressurized water.
The fan wheel (cylindrical impeller) is where the smell hides most; the black layer on its blades is visible to the eye. In a good cleaning, the wheel is also removed or washed in place, the drain pan is cleaned and the flow is checked by running water through the drain line. The unit is then started and the pressure, discharge temperature and drainage are checked again.
Smell not going away?
Our team chemically washes the indoor unit, checks the drainage and the refrigerant, and solves the problem on site.
With a sewage smell, the problem is usually the plumbing itself rather than the unit. If the drain line is connected directly to the wastewater drain without a trap, gas in the drain pipe travels through the hose all the way to the indoor unit. The solution is to add a trap to the line or to change the connection point of the line.
A sweetish, chemical smell, though rarely, can point to a refrigerant leak. In this case, the technician checks the flare connections, the indoor unit coil and the piping with a leak detector and a foam test. If a leak is found, it is repaired first, then a vacuum is drawn and the refrigerant charge is completed according to the manufacturer's value. Adding gas without repairing the leak is not a lasting solution.
Is it possible to prevent the smell from the start?
Yes, bad smell is largely prevented by regular maintenance and correct use. For home split air conditioners, professional maintenance is recommended at least once a year, and twice a year with heavy use or in environments with dust and cooking vapor. Maintenance done at the start of the season both prevents smell and preserves cooling efficiency. You can find what maintenance covers in our article how often should air conditioner maintenance be done.
In daily use, two habits make a difference: washing the filter regularly and drying the coil before turning the unit off. Using the air conditioner at around 24-26 °C instead of a very low temperature also reduces excess condensation and the moisture load on the coil.
When should you call service without waiting?
If another symptom comes with the smell, do not wait. A burnt or electrical smell, smoke from the unit, water dripping from the indoor unit, weak cooling or a sweetish chemical smell requires a technician check. Continuing to run an air conditioner that smells musty is not recommended, especially in homes with people who have asthma, allergies or respiratory sensitivity.
YOİ Mühendislik teams perform chemical indoor unit cleaning, drainage checks and refrigerant leak tests on split, cassette and ducted air conditioners of all brands. Frequently asked questions
Why does an air conditioner smell bad when first turned on?
While it sits off, mold and bacteria grow on the damp evaporator and drain pan. When the unit is turned on, the fan blows this smell into the room during the first few minutes.
Is the air conditioner smell harmful to health?
Smells caused by mold and bacteria can worsen complaints, especially in people with allergies and asthma. If there is a persistent musty smell, you need to have the indoor unit chemically cleaned.
What causes a sewage smell from the air conditioner?
Most often, the drain line is connected to the wastewater drain without a trap. Gas in the drain pipe reaches the indoor unit through the hose; adding a trap to the line solves the problem.
Does air conditioner cleaning spray remove the smell?
Sprays suppress the smell temporarily but do not reach behind the coil or the fan wheel. The lasting solution is a chemical, pressurized-water indoor unit cleaning done by service.
What should I do if the air conditioner gives off a burning smell?
Switch the unit off at the fuse and do not run it again. A burning smell can point to the board, wiring or motor overheating; a qualified technician must check it.
