We deliberately do not give figures in this article: prices vary by brand, capacity, piping and city, and they become outdated quickly. If you send us the details, we prepare a written, itemized quote.
Searches for heat pumps rise a little more every winter. Natural gas and electricity prices, the tiered natural gas tariff and the renewable energy requirement in new buildings have moved the heat pump from the 'we'll look at it someday' list to the 'let's decide this winter' list. The most common question is always the same: how much does a heat pump cost? An honest answer to that is only possible after seeing your home; but if you know which items determine the price, you can compare quotes correctly.
The 8 items that determine heat pump price
| Item | Effect on price | What to ask in the quote? |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity (kW) | The biggest factor. An oversized unit is both expensive and runs inefficiently. | Which heat loss calculation was the capacity based on? |
| Type: monobloc or split | In a monobloc, the refrigerant stays in the outdoor unit; in a split type, copper piping runs to the indoor unit. Installation and piping differ. | Why was this type recommended? |
| Hot water (cylinder) tank | If domestic hot water is also wanted, the tank volume and type add to the cost. | Was the tank volume chosen according to the number of people? |
| Buffer tank, pump, valve set | May be needed depending on the water volume of the existing system and the number of zones. | Is a buffer tank needed, and why? |
| Heating system | Underfloor heating is the most suitable because it works with a low water temperature; in a home with radiators, the adequacy of the radiators is checked. | Are the radiators sufficient at low temperatures? |
| Electrical infrastructure | Depending on the unit's power, a separate line, fuse and sometimes a three-phase connection are required. | Are the electrical line and subscription capacity sufficient? |
| Controls and automation | Room thermostats, weather compensation and remote access options. | Which control panel and sensors are included? |
| Installation and commissioning | Outdoor unit location, base, vibration isolators, condensate drainage, flushing of the system and commissioning. | Are commissioning and initial settings included in the quote? |
The right capacity: half of the price is decided here
If heat pump capacity is chosen with rough rules such as 'so many kW per square meter', the unit either ends up too small and cannot keep up in the cold, or too large and cycles on and off frequently. The right way is to base it on the insulation of walls, windows and roof, with a heat loss calculation . For a rough idea, you can use our U-value and heat loss calculator. In a poorly insulated home, improving the exterior insulation or windows first can deliver the same comfort with a smaller and cheaper heat pump.
Air-to-water, ground-to-water, hybrid
The most common type in homes in Türkiye is the air-to-water heat pump: it takes heat from the outdoor air and transfers it to radiator or underfloor heating water. Ground-to-water systems require drilling or a horizontal collector, so the initial investment is much higher, but they are not affected by outdoor air temperature. Hybrid system, the heat pump works together with the existing combi boiler; the boiler takes over on very cold days. We explain the types in detail in our article on heat pump types and brands.
As important as the purchase price: running cost
The real advantage of a heat pump shows up on the bill. The unit's efficiency over the season is expressed as its SCOP value: with a SCOP of 4, it produces about 4 kWh of heat per 1 kWh of electricity on a seasonal average. You can roughly estimate the annual cost like this:
Annual electricity (kWh) ≈ Annual heat demand (kWh) ÷ SCOP
You can find your annual heat demand from past natural gas bills: multiplying annual m³ consumption by about 9 gives the heat used in kWh. Divide that number by the SCOP and multiply by your electricity unit price, and you have the basis for comparing with natural gas. We made the detailed comparison in our article on heat pump vs combi boiler.
6 checks when comparing quotes
- Is the capacity based on a heat loss calculation, or on a square-meter estimate?
- Is the capacity the unit delivers at the design outdoor temperature (below zero in winter for Ankara) stated in writing?
- Are the hot water tank, buffer tank, pump and valves listed separately?
- Who is responsible for the electrical line and fuse work?
- Are commissioning, user training and first-year maintenance included?
- Are the warranty terms and the authorized service network clear?
Let's calculate the right heat pump for your home
Tell us your floor area, insulation status, current heating system and annual natural gas consumption; we will prepare a site survey and a written quote.
When does it make sense to buy?
A heat pump pays for itself fastest in new buildings with underfloor heating, detached houses and summer homes without natural gas, homes where an old and inefficient boiler is being replaced, and buildings with solar panels. Planning the installation before the heating season starts removes the risk of being left without heating mid-season. We are an authorized service for LG Therma V; for other brands we do installation and maintenance as an independent technical service. See our heat pump page for options.
Frequently asked questions
Why do heat pump prices vary so much?
Capacity, unit type, hot water tank, compatibility with the existing system, electrical infrastructure and installation scope differ from quote to quote. Quotes that do not cover the same scope cannot be compared directly.
Does a heat pump work with radiators?
It does, but you need to check whether the radiators can heat the home at a low water temperature. If necessary, some radiators are replaced with larger ones.
How many years does it take for a heat pump to pay for itself?
It depends on your current fuel, energy prices, the home's heat loss and the unit's SCOP. During the site survey we calculate it with your own consumption data.
Is a heat pump enough in winter in Ankara?
A model of the right capacity that is suited to low outdoor temperatures is enough. For very cold days, a hybrid solution or a backup heater can be planned.
