In shortTest chambers need fast and precise temperature changes, so their refrigeration circuits are usually single-stage or cascade (two-stage) systems that reach below −40 °C. Failure to reach temperature, slow pull-down and pressure alarms are usually caused by dirty condensers, refrigerant leaks, worn compressors or expansion valve problems.

Cascade systems
In cascade systems the high stage (e.g. R404A or R449A) cools the condenser of the low stage, which runs on a very-low-temperature fluid such as R23 or R744. Low-stage charges are weighed precisely against manufacturer values.
